Police say a 58-year-old Royal Oak man is dead after crashing into a building along Woodward on Tuesday morning.
Royal Oak Police tells 7 Action News they believe the driver of the SUV had some type of medical emergency, causing him to lose control of his vehicle around 5:30 a.m.
Police say the accident started at Woodward and Catalpa Drive before the SUV jumped the median into oncoming southbound traffic and eventually crashing into the medical center.
“That individual had to be extricated from the vehicle initially and was transported to William Beaumont Hospital where he was pronounced deceased,” said Lt. Keith Spencer with the Royal Oak Police Department.
The owners of the cataract center say they are working with their insurance to fix the building, and will be operating out of Straith Hospital for the time being.
No one was inside the medical center at the time, and no one else was injured.
“Even at 6 a.m., coming both ways and to cross a median and no one gets hurt for a half a mile, that’s just amazing to me” Paul said.
