LAKE ORION, Mich. (WXYZ) — A Lake Orion Police Department Enforcement Officer was checking a home with overgrown grass and weeds when he discovered a mysterious scene – a dead man and dog, and an unconscious 73-year-old woman inside.

Police say the two found were mother and son. Both resided in the home, and the cause of death of the 47-year-old man is currently under investigation.

The incident happened Tuesday, May 28 around 1 p.m. An investigation found that the man had been dead for about three days prior to being discovered.

Before entering the home, the officer noticed a considerable about of mail left in the mailbox. When he entered the residence, he found the man at the back door. After additional officers arrived on the scene, they found the 73-year-old woman unconscious near the front door.

The dog was found dead on the kitchen floor.

The woman was taken to a local hospital. Officers were concerned that there was possible carbon monoxide poisoning while conducting the investigation on the scene. That turned out not to be the case.

According to a release, the Oakland County Hazmat team arrived to the house to clear it for any other possible toxic gasses or fumes. There were also no signs of violence or trauma to the man, woman or dog. There were no signs of damage or struggle inside the home.

Officials are awaiting autopsy results and toxicology reports on the man. The woman is in critical but stable condition, and is unable to speak to investigators at the moment due to her condition. The deceased dog is also being tested for cause of death.

Authorities assure residents in the area that there is no hazard inside the home, and no health risk to area homes.
