MONROE, Mich. (WXYZ) — A woman died in a fire at a duplex in Monroe Tuesday morning.
A fire was reported at the home located in the 100 block of Tremont St.
Upon the arrival of officers from the Monroe Police Department, they found the occupants evacuating but learned a woman was still trapped inside.
Due to heavy smoke and fire, the officers were unable to see or make entry into the home.
The Monroe Fire Department arrived on scene within a few moments, police say, and the fire was extinguished. The woman who had been inside was found deceased.
Officials say the property did not have working smoke alarms at the time of the fire. One family has been displaced.
