Macomb Township trustee Clifford Freitas, 43, was arrested at his home this morning by the FBI, according to sources.
According to a criminal complaint filed Monday, Freitas is accused of bid rigging and accepting bribes while acting on the Board of Trustees in Macomb Township.
Freitas is expected to be arraigned in federal court at 1 p.m.
If convicted, Freitas faces up to 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
“Bribery in municipal contracting undermines clean and effective government and erodes public trust,” stated U.S. Attorney Barbara McQuade in a press release.
FBI announced earlier this month that it is conducting an investigation into widespread government corruption in Macomb County.
