Macomb County prosecutors have charged a man in the accidental shooting death of a 3-year-old boy in Clinton Township.
Prosecutors say 29-year-old Lamonte Odell Johnson was showing off a handgun and ignored a warning that a child picked it up on Tuesday at the Newport Arms Apartments.
Cameron Dillard, 3, picked up the gun, shot himself in the stomach and died.
Johnson is now charged with Second Degree Murder and a Felon in Possession of a Firearm and facing up to life in prison.
Prosecutors say Johnson has a long criminal history and was on parole for carrying a concealed weapon. The Magistrate ordered him held on a $1 Million cash bond.
Family members of Johnson came to court and later told reporters, they are shocked and sorry for what happened. Johnson only works part time and told the judge he needs a court appointed attorney.
