VAN BUREN TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WXYZ) — A 90-year-old man is in critical condition after crashing his vehicle into a pond in Van Buren Township, officials say.
The driver, who is from Grosse Ile Township, was traveling southbound on Belleville Road on Nov. 22, when he ran off the roadway,struck a light pole and fire hydrant and continued to travel in a southwest direction across an open field, before crashing into a retention pond.
Authorities say the Van Buren Township Fire Department was able to remove the driver from the sinking vehicle before it is completely submerged. The driver was treated at the scene and taken to the hospital, where he is currently in critical condition.
The submerged vehicle was recovered on Nov. 23.
Officials say the accident remains under investigation.
