Three metro Detroit men are getting lawmakers attention in an effort to change child support laws as they walked from Detroit to Lansing to change the Dad by Default law.
- Under Michigan laws men may not be the father, but still owe child support
- Court finally stops trying to make Detroit man pay child support for child that isn't his
The three fathers started their journey at the municipal building on Woodward.
In 2014, we told you about Carnell Alexander who was forced to pay child support for a kid that wasn't his. He was in prison for a crime he committed years ago when an ex listed him as the father and the notice went to his old house.
When he didn't appear in court, he became a dad by default.
The dads arrived in Lansing and shared their stories. They're hoping representatives will pass legislation that would protect men from being forced to pay for another man's child.
A bipartisan group of lawmakers are now working together on the issue.
