As Puerto Rico reels from the devastation of Hurricane Maria, Puerto Ricans right here at home are grappling with lack of communication with their family members on the island.

Detroit resident Shayla Santo says her mind has been racing for the past week.

She's been waiting for a phone call from her siblings, who she hasn't been able to connect with in 9 days.

Santo's family, along with many others now in Puerto Rico, are reeling from the horrific impact of Hurricane Maria and before that, Hurricane Irma.

All Santo says all she knows are the devastating images she hears and sees on the news.

But despite thee tears, the fear and hopelessness, Santo says she's pushing through to take action -- teaming up with Rincon Tropical, a southwest Detroit restaurant now wrangling in supplies to provide relief to the humanitarian crisis.

The group is accepting food, diapers, and batteries but say what they are in most need of right now is medicine, baby formula, and insect repellent.

The donation will be open through the end of October. You can drop all supplies off to Rincon Tropical, located at 6538 Michigan Avenue in Detroit. Open daily, 11am to 8pm.
