Seniors will soon have a new place to call home in Detroit and it's gaining national attention. Local, state and federal officials came together to celebrate the opening of Hartford Village.

The new facility is a partnership between the Hartford Memorial Church and Presbyterian Village. It's a gated community that includes 39 independent living cottages with two bedrooms, two bathrooms, a garage and 24-hour security.

It has 45 independent living apartments that offer one and two-bedroom floorplans.

The units all have the same amenities you would find in the suburbs. It's even drawing high praise from new HUD Secretary Ben Carson.

"I am proud that we are honoring elderly people in our society and doing our duty of taking care of them and having an example like this which can be shown across this nation, getting people involved in solving our own problems," he said.
