Police are investigating after a Detroit firefighter was found murdered on the city's west side Monday night.

It happened at the firefighter's home in the 7600 block of Vaughan around 7:30 p.m.

Sources tell us the victim is 59 years old. His son told police he had gone to check on his father and found him with a gunshot wound to the head.

The Wayne County Medical Examiner confirms that the cause of death for the firefighter is blunt force trauma to the head. 

Police say the firefighter likely had been dead for 24 hours when he was found. 

No weapons were discovered at the scene.

The victim's car, a black 2015 Ford Explorer, was missing and later recovered by police. A bedroom had also been ransacked and there are other items missing from the house.

Officials say the victim had over 25 years of service with the city.
