A Detroit police officer has died after getting struck by another vehicle near Puritan and Monica on the city's west side Friday night.
The officer has been identified as Myron Jarrett.
A driver tells us she was hit by a car, but that driver never stopped - so she chased after him.
She caught up with the car, near the same time officers did.
As officers were arresting the driver, a van came plowing through the intersection, hitting the police cruiser, Officer Jarrett and another car.
Jarrett was taken to the hospital where he died from his injures.
Police released a photo of a suspect wanted in connection to the hit-and-run. They later arrested Steven Guzina in connection with the incident.
Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan released this statement:
"Our thoughts and prayers go out today to the family of Ofc. Myron Jarrett, the fallen DPD officer who lost his life last night while serving and protecting our city. Our hearts also are with his DPD family. Despite the grief they are feeling today, the men and women of the Detroit Police Department responded quickly and professionally to locate and arrest the person responsible for Officer Jarrett's death."
Sources say Guzina had recently separated from his wife, and his relatives tell 7 Action News he may have been on a binge of drugs and alcohol. We're told he has had prior issues with crack and alcohol.
