"When they started arguing and the situation didn't get diffused, I just kind of told my family let's get away from them," said Chiquita Keen-Johnston who was near Jefferson and Woodward in downtown Detroit Monday night to watch the fireworks over the river.

But when Keen-Johnston, her husband, mother and three young grandchildren began to move away from the trouble, they heard a shot.
"I couldn't really say anything quick enough, but I collapsed and my husband thought I tripped.. and actually, I'd been shot," said Keen-Johnston.
As her husband and mother surrounded her to protect her, Keen-Johnston's 8-year-old grandson immediately ran to the nearest police officer he could find for help.
"So, he's one of my heroes outside of the Detroit Police Department. They did a wonderful job at keeping me safe and calm," Keen-Johnston said from her hospital bed at Henry Ford Hospital.
No arrests have been made. Two people who were detained after the shooting have been released pending further investigation, according to Detroit Police.
