Man robbed and shot at Detroit car wash

Posted

Detroit Police are searching for the armed robber who targeted a man inside a car wash.

It happened at the Newer Phase Hand Car Wash at Gratiot and Baldwin in Detroit around midday.

“I brought my car in today, sat in the waiting room,” said one customer who wanted to remain anonymous. “All I heard was shots.”

That customer ran for cover, hiding behind a refrigerator in the waiting room.

“As I hid behind the fridge, I was thinking I was in the wrong place, if they want to stick the place up,"the customer told 7 Action News. "The waiting room is where they kept the money.”

It was an armed robbery, but the man didn’t go after money paid to the car wash. The gunman wanted a 28-year-old customer’s Cartier sunglasses and gold chain with a medallion.

When the victim resisted, the robber shot him.

He managed to grab the chain, and take off. The sunglasses were dropped in the business.

The victim, who was in his van, managed to speed out of the business a short distance.

“He was able to drive his van into the middle of the street, and I guess someone took him to the hospital,” said the customer there when it happened.

Police say the 28-year-old victim is in critical condition in the hospital.

Officers are still searching for the armed robber. He was last seen speeding away from the scene in a dark blue Malibu. There was red tape on the driver’s side taillight of the car.

Anyone with information on who he is is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-SPEAK-UP.
