Michigan State Police has announced that troopers patrolling in the City of Detroit will be prohibited from engaging in vehicle pursuits resulting from a traffic violation or misdemeanor offense.
This policy change will be in effect until Official Order 10 is revised.
The change only applies to vehicle pursuits within the city of Detroit.
Mayor Mike Duggan said he met with Governor Rick Snyder and urged MSP to adopt the City of Detroit's policy when patrolling Detroit.
He also spoke with State Representative Sheldon Neely of Flint and expressed support for his proposed legislation to require MSP to abide by local pursuit policies when patrolling within the boundaries of a city.
"I am encouraged that MSP leadership is taking steps towards changing its policy," he said.
These changes come about after the death of 15-year-old Damon Grimes, who died after a chase with an MSP trooper who deployed his taser.
Duggan said he fully supports Detroit Police Chief James Craig's decision to have the Detroit Police Department conduct an independend investigation
