The Hygrade Deli at 24th & Michigan is just a couple of blocks from the scene of shooting on Wednesday night. The suspect, Durham, is known to the employees there.
"Through the years, he's been a regular in the neighborhood as far back as I can remember,” said Stuart Litt, the owner of the Hygrade Deli.
Employees said he kept to himself, usually ordering a coffee and sometimes breakfast too.
"When I saw his face, my first reaction was that looks like my customer,” said Litt. "I was totally amazed and shocked.”.
The employees said they just couldn’t picture the 60-year-old involved in what he’s accused of doing.
"As we know him here you'd have no clue whatsoever that he carried a weapon or even had the ability to use a weapon, that's the shocking part of the whole thing,” said Litt.
Just down Michigan at the Marathon Gas Station, the attendant said the same thing.
"Keeps to himself, makes me laugh, all the time, literally couldn't believe when the cops showed me his picture and it was him, I was shocked,” said Ismael Farraj, the attendant at the Marathon.
Durham’s family has also spoken out about him. They’ve acknowledged he does have some mental health problems, but they don’t believe he’s guilty.
