Couple charged in death of 18-month-old

A local mother and her boyfriend are facing charges in connection with the death of her 18 month-old
son.

William Mark Warren, 23, of Detroit, and Brandee Danielle Wright, 22, from Warren, were arrested Thursday.

According to police, Wright and Warren brought her son, 18-month-old Amere Carver, to McLaren Macomb Hospital on Aug. 11.

Amere was transported to Children's Hospital in Detroit where he died two days later. Prosecutors say Amere suffered severe head trauma and other serious injuries while he was in Warren's care.

While they say Wright was not there when the alleged deadly abuse happened, they believe she knew her son was being abused, but did nothing to protect him.

Investigators also say Wright asked a roommate to help cover up the incident by lying about who was watching Amere.

Police also say two weeks before Amere died, a pediatrician saw bruising to Amere's face, arms and genital area. Doctors also found a severe burn to one of his fingers at McLaren Macomb.

With the help of FBI Macomb County, the Detroit Violent Crimes Task Force and uniformed Detroit police officers, Clinton Township police arrested both of them on East Outer Drive in Detroit. Warren is charged with Homicide Felony Murder and First Degree Child Abuse. Wright was charged with Homicide Manslaughter, Second Degree Child Abuse and Lying to a Peace Officer.

In court on Friday, Wright said "I'm really at a loss for words .. I'm not a bad guy."

He is being held without bond. Brandee Wright is being held on $1 million dollars bond.

Both families declined to comment, but Wright's attorney spoke with 7 Action News. Wyatt Harris said he can't comment much because he's waiting to take a look at the discovery in the case.

"It's unfortunate. She's a parent dealing with a very difficult situation," he said.
