Selfridge Air National Guard Base and Macomb County launched a new offensive to highlight the importance of landing the F-35 Lightning II fighter jet.
They want to rally support for a big contract with the U.S. Air Force to make Selfridge a home base for the F-35.
Five bases are under consideration. Only two will make the final cut.
Macomb County Executive Mark Hackel describes the potential economic impact as incredible. "We have a chance right now to solidify this base and its existence for the next generation to come," he says. "For the next 30 years we will not have to talk about base realignment or closures out here at Selfridge."
Beyond the local economic impact, leaders at Selfridge say having the F-35 at the base would also make strategic sense for our national defense.
