A Syrian scientist whose story went viral after President Obama commented on it on Facebook has arrived in the Detroit area.

Refaai Hamo and his family spoke to reporters through an interpreter at the Marriott at Metro Airport shortly after flying in.

Hamo has been living in Turkey for the last two years. The 54-year-old's home was destroyed in the bombings. He also lost his wife and daughter.

Hamo arrived in Detroit with his surviving family.

He said he refuses to be called only a refugee.

He also said he is tired and grateful to be in the Detroit area.

The family will be settling into a fully furnished home in Oakland County. However, the exact location is being kept a secret because of security concerns.

Hamo is suffering from stomach cancer.

Since his story went viral, hundreds of thousands of dollars has been raised for his family. They are being set up with a financial advisor to help them manage the funds.
