A 12-year-old girl walking to school in Highland Park was nearly kidnapped on Tuesday morning, police say.

According to police, it happened just before 7 a.m. outside on an abandoned building on Oakman Blvd.

We're told the girl was walking with her brothers and sisters when a man hiding in the bushes jumped out and and grabbed her. She was running late behind her siblings when the man tried to abduct her.

"When I walked past, he grabbed my arm," Raja Ringo said. "I was trying to pull away but I didn't scream because I was crying."

According to police, the kids continued to the bus stop and told the bus driver what happened. The bus driver then took the kids home.

Raja's dad says the abandoned building attracts squatters and should be torn down.

"It's creepy to the kids," he said. "Just walking past it every morning, it's abandoned, you don't know what's in it."

The Highland Park police chief said they are going to get into schools to talk about child safety, stranger danger and let kids know they will do everything they an to arrest the man.

The suspect is described as an African-American man wearing a blue beanie.
