A sign posted to the front of a local salon has stirred up quite a debate on social media. It says "no men please" - when it's a salon that supposed service everyone.
It seems this employee was trying to do the customer a favor, based on religious needs. But the salon is now calling the action "inappropriate."
The sign was up for less than an hour, but that’s apparently long enough to spark some controversy.
A man took a photo at SmartStyle, a salon that leases space from the Wal-Mart on Telegraph road in Taylor.
It turns out the employee was trying accommodate a Muslim woman who wears a head scarf - her hair not allowed to be seen by men.
Everyone who talked with us on camera today said were the torn over the matter, others admitted to us they felt it was discrimination against men.
The company did release a statement saying:
SmartStyle welcomes all guests, and we apologize to anyone who was offended. The message was inappropriate and it does not reflect our standards or beliefs.
Suhaila Amen, a Muslim American community activist says it's important to remember the employee likely had good intentions.
We did confirm that the employee in question no longer works with the company. But it’s not because they were terminated.
The salon tells me the person had plans to leave before the incident took place.
