Students leave school after teachers call in

For the second time this week, students at a school in Detroit are staying home because their teachers didn't show up.

This comes after Monday's mass sick-out staged to protest what teachers call deplorable conditions across the district.

But this time, school was not canceled.

Students came to Marquette Elementary-Middle school this cold morning fully expecting to be in class today--only to find out most of their teachers called out sick, leaving frustrated parents wondering why they weren’t given any notice.

A robocall went out to parents telling them school was in fact in session, despite the fact most teachers called out sick. The district called in staff from their central office to fill in - and when a parent went into the building, they saw about 10 teachers.

DPS says they didn’t get any notice from teachers about staging another sick-out here this week and that teachers at all other schools showed up. Several teachers who work at the school tell 7 Action News that they called in early--not at the last minute.

Meanwhile, some Marquette students who have midterms tomorrow say they’ll just have to prepare on their own at home.
