The Toys R Us store in Southfield is closing after a 45-year run, according to a corporate spokesperson.
The Southfield location at 27000 Telegraph Road will officially close in January. Toys R Us says that is the end of the company's lease term for the property.
Store employees tell 7 Action News that sales to liquidate the store's inventory could take place before the end of this year.
For many in Oakland County, the Southfield Toys R Us store is surely a place of childhood memories. That location opened in time for the 1970 holiday shopping season.
The toy store is located along Telegraph Road, near 11 Mile Road, in an area that's seen great retail change over the years. The Tel-Twelve Mall once welcomed shoppers just down the road. Today, it is home to a Best Buy, Meijer and other big box stores.
"We’ve enjoyed serving the Southfield community for many years," said Toys R Us corporate communications manager Alyssa Peera when we asked about the store closing.
A check of the Toys R Us website shows about ten other metro Detroit stores.
