A mother is claiming self-defense following a deadly shooting Saturday night in Detroit’s west side.
According to Starr Holmes' attorney, his client is a CPL holder and shot Pap Robinson Jenkins, 31, when her life was in danger.
“This is a domestic incident,” said Todd Kaluzni. “She’s not dangerous to anybody, she’s not a violent person.”
Despite that argument, a 36th District Court judge decided against granting Holmes’ bond. Kaluzni said he wasn’t surprised, but was disappointed.
Holmes’ family declined family following the arraignment, but did speak off camera. Holmes’ mother was emotional, but through tears described a loving mother of a 1-year-old son who was fighting for her life.
She said that Jenkins was choking her daughter before she shot and killed Jenkins.
Kaluzni said two witnesses that he’s spoke with led him to believe his client shot and killed Jenkins in self-defense, but admitted there is a third witness that he hasn’t spoke with.
There is also a surveillance video that Kaluzni said he’s still trying to obtain to get a better look at the shooting.
“From what I hear, she was fighting for her life,” said Kaluzni. “She had no choice, it’s not something anyone ever wants to do, but when it’s kill or be killed you have to do what you have to do.”
Holmes is due back in court on March 13th for a hearing on the case. She is facing a second degree murder charge, and a felony firearm charge.
