SOUTHFIELD, MICH (WXYZ) — On Saturday, August 24, the Mike Morse Law Firm is kicking off its Project Backpack with the Big Tent Backpack Event.
The free event will take place from noon until 2 p.m. in the back parking lot of the Mike Morse Law Firm, located at 24901 Northwestern Hwy. The fun will also include light refreshments and appearances by Detroit Pistons mascot, Hooper, and a surprise Pistons guest. Supply-filled backpacks will be handed out on a first-come, first-serve basis. Children bust be present to receive a backpack.
This year, for the first time, elementary school kids from any district in Metro Detroit will have the opportunity to pick up a free supply-filled backpack. This event is for students outside of Detroit Public Schools Community District. Mike Morse Law Firm will deliver 28,000 backpacks to DPSCD schools August 26-28, so every Detroit elementary student will have a backpack again this year.
Since it began in 2014, Project Backpack has donated more than 130,000 backpacks stuffed with pencils, crayons, notebooks and other supplies, to students in the Detroit Public Schools Community District (DPSCD), as well as to school districts in Flint, Pontiac, Oak Park and Hazel Park.
