GROSSE POINTE SHORES, Mich. (WXYZ) — A man is recovering after driving a vehicle into Lake Saint Clair in Grosse Pointe Shores, police said.
It happened at about 5:30 a.m. in the area of Lake Shore Road and Lochmoor Boulevard.
The driver was on Lake Shore Road when he and his car crashed into the freezing lake.
Lt. Ken Werenski of the St. Clair Shores Police Department said police got a call from an in-vehicle security service that said someone was in Lake Saint Clair. He said two officers responded to the scene first and one of them made a daring move.
"The officer had to get into the water and hypothermia is no joke, so they were up against the odds," Werenski said. "We had to pretty much rescue two people coming out of the water."
Werenski said the officer has been on the job for 20 years and is a certified driver.
The driver was taken to the hospital and was said to be alert. The officer who risked his life went back to the station to warm up and is doing just fine.
Watch officials pulling the vehicle from the water here.
