(WXYZ) — As we approach the end of winter, it means the beginning of construction season, and there are two major highway closures this weekend in metro Detroit.
I-75 will be closed from I-696 to 8 Mile in both directions as part of the I-75 Modernization project, and I-94 will close from I-75 to Conner Ave. as part of the I-94 Modernization project.
The closures are required to demolish bridges over both highways.
Detours for each are below.
I-94
During this closure, westbound I-94 traffic will be detoured via westbound M-102 (Eight Mile Road), southbound M-3 (Gratiot Avenue), the westbound Gratiot Connector, and northbound I-75 back to westbound I-94.
Eastbound I-94 traffic will be detoured via southbound I-75, the eastbound Gratiot Connector, northbound M-3, and eastbound M-102 back to eastbound I-94. All entrance ramps to eastbound I-94 will be closed starting at 7 p.m. from I-96 to Gratiot Avenue and will reopen by 5 a.m. Monday.
I-75
Northbound I-75 traffic will be detoured west on 8 Mile Road to northbound M-1 (Woodward Avenue), then eastbound I-696 back to northbound I-75. Southbound I-75 traffic will use westbound I-696 to southbound M-1, then eastbound 8 Mile Road back to southbound I-75.
Also, I-75 will have only one lane open in each direction between I-696 and 14 Mile over the weekend.
After the closure lifts Monday, there will be ramp closures that last until the end of the construction season.
- The Eastbound and westbound I-696 ramps to southbound I-75,
- All entrance and exit ramps along southbound I-75 from south of I-696 to 8 Mile Road.
In addition, southbound I-75 traffic will be shifted onto the northbound lanes in the vicinity of 13 Mile Road. The shift will allow crews to rebuild the southbound I-75 bridge over 13 Mile Road this construction season.
