NOVI, Mich. (WXYZ) — If you’ve been shopping at or around Twelve Oaks Mall in Novi, you’ve likely noticed plenty of orange cones.
“It’s kind of hard to maneuver around here,” said Deon Haynes.
Right now, northbound Novi Road bridge over I-96 is down to one lane. The ramp from southbound Novi Road to eastbound I-96 is closed until August 19.
There have also been double-lane closures on both eastbound and westbound I-96 on the weekends.
“It was one Sunday where they closed it down to one lane, I was like people still gotta get up, gotta go to turn, go grocery shopping, stuff like that, it was pretty bad,” Haynes said.
Once the bridge is complete it will have a new sidewalk, something the old bridge did not have. The work is slated to be complete on the bridge in October.
The expansion of nearby Crescent Boulevard is inching closer to completion, but saw slowdowns because of the pandemic.
“We’ve has some issues pre-COVID, the manufacture of our guardrail is backed up and then we have also had some utility relocation we have been dealing with, so that project is behind schedule, but we are hoping to press forward here in the fall,” said Novi Director of Public Works Jeff Herczeg.
The goal is to alleviate congestion at the intersection of Grand River and Novi Road.
Grand River is seeing construction just west of that intersection. Both westbound and eastbound lanes are down to one lane. The Oakland County Road Commission is spending $2.2 million for bridge repair.
The work on the Grand River bridge should be done in November.
