A young male is in police custody in connection with the shooting of a 7-year-old boy on Detroit's east side.

Police were called to a home on the 11000 block of Chelsea Avenue near Conner Street and Gratiot Avenue just before 11 p.m. Thursday night.

The boy's mother told officers she heard multiple shots being fired outside their home. Moments later, her son came down from his bedroom to tell her he had been shot.

Detroit Police Chief James Craig said the man in custody is a person of interest. They believe the shooter was standing across the street from the boy's home on Wilshire and firing at a home, striking it several times and a vehicle.

Bullets went past the intended home and hit the child's home on Chelsea. Police said the child was playing in his room when he was hit.

Police have not released many details about the person of interest, but they did say that he is connected to the intended target through a relationship that ended.
