(WXYZ) — The flip of a coin by the Michigan High School Athletic Association took Imlay City out of the playoffs this weekend and put Durand in. Both are Mid-Michigan small towns and both had the same record. Imlay City school officials don’t want to sound like they’re whining but are clearly disappointed.
In a news release, Athletic Director Don Gauthier says they congratulate Durand for winning the coin toss and earning a well-deserved playoff selection. It also says if Imlay City had won 6 games it would automatically be in. The record is 5-4 and Imlay City hasn’t been in the playoffs since 2001, the year seniors would have been born.
Some are looking at Chandler Park Academy in Harper Woods as another factor. Did it back out of a final game with Cranbrook Kingswood that if they had lost would have them out of the playoffs. Cranbrook says yes, Chandler Park says no. That game was not under a written contract and there’s no penalty, so Chandler Park is automatically in the playoffs.
Some might be wondering what if Imlay City and Durand were in a playoff game. That will be answered when the two teams play in their first game, next year.
