The North American International Auto Show promises a look at new vehicles, new technology and new designs.
General Motor’s Vice President of Global Design, Ed Welburn talked one-on-one with 7 Action News about what’s hot for the coming year.
"This is my world, designing cars and at that, I'm still like a little kid when it comes to the show,” said Welburn.
He has been in the thick of car design for decades, but he says the excitement doesn’t get old.
Especially for concept cars like Buick’s Avista.
"I've been involved in the design of this concept from the very first sketches and yet when I see it here, it's like seeing it for the very first time again,” said Welburn.
He calls the Avista a sculptural beauty with perfect proportions, but it’s the rich blue color that’s getting most of the attention.
"We've heard more about the color than anything else,” said Welburn.
Jewel tones are in and what we see on the runway is what we see in the future of car design according to Welburn.
"We're very much inspired by what happens in the fashion industry,” said Welburn.
Another area we can expect to see design changes, the interior. Technology is changing the way we drive and shift.
"Once you go electric then you start to rethink the interior space and once you've got an autonomous you really start to rethink the interior space,” said Welburn.
One thing Welburn said that is not changing when it comes to car designs, change itself.
"I can't think of a thing in a car that will not change,” said Welburn.
