Ford puts the pedal to the metal on production to meet pent up demand

DEARBORN, Mich. (WXYZ) — Ford has moved up its schedule by two weeks and is announcing full US production will resume on Monday.

Auto plants resumed production in Michigan last month after a two-month shutdown because of COVID-19.

Autoline.tv auto analyst John McElroy tells 7 Action News this is due to pent up consumer demand.

McElroy says, “it’s good to see but now we have to see if it’s sustainable.”

The Detroit Big 3 automakers instituted extensive safety protocols inside plants before reopening. They also used those protocols to make ventilators, respirators, masks, and other PPE during the plant shutdown and they have been in use overseas where plants reopened before the US.

The Detroit Big 3 also borrowed billions of dollars to stay afloat during this massive downtown and a full recovery could be some time.

McElroy says it will depend on how much the car market comes back adding, “my guess is it’s not going to take months for them to recover it’s going to take them several years.”

He says that includes dealers and suppliers.
