Strike and social media: Facebook is helping UAW members during GM strike

DETROIT (WXYZ) — This is day 12 of the strike against General Motors by some 49,000 members of the United Auto Workers Union.

Communication from the top of the union at the Ren Cen is not like previous strikes where they used phone calls and word of mouth. This is 2019 and the age of social media.

A Facebook page has been set up for all UAW members. And several local unions have set up their own pages.

Most of them are closed, meaning a moderator has to approve people to get access. Some have been in use before the strike. They are used now to provide real time information.

In some cases, incorrect information can be posted but often other members see it and correct it.
