(WXYZ) — For a lot of people, the new year signifies a time to get your health and fitness back on track, but with the COVID-19 pandemic, many people got into new routines at home. Gyms have been hurting, and they're trying to win you back.
Folks are punching their way into the new year at Heavy Hitters Cardio Kickboxing in Grosse Pointe Woods. Kathy Connell Brennan is one of them.
"Some classes you’ll box for, you know, 20 minutes, a half-hour. And then you’ll do weights and lunges and that sort of stuff for the rest of the time," Brennan said.
Brennan's trainer, Vanessa Bernardo, owns the gym, which not only survived the pandemic shutdown last year, but also was built back after a fire last May.
“Every single inch of every piece of equipment is cleaned, disinfected," Bernardo said.
Her incentive to new clients is 20% off whatever package they want.
I reached out to people on Instagram about their fitness plans. Of those responded, 75% said they'd be working out at home.
Some people are buying treadmills, others bikes or Beachbody on demand, and Pelaton is also big.
A quarter of those responded said they're all about the gym.
Jordan Ghannam said, "Orange Theory Fitness is giving the best results and it's so fun."
To get clients in the door, Orange Theory is offering one month free for a limited time.
Planet Fitness is also offering new members a zero-down enrollment, $10 a month with no commitments. They also have a "crowd meter" on the app which will show you how busy a gym is at a certain time.
LifeTime Fitness is also offering deals for in-home and online workers. New members can sign up for a year of personal training for $99.
