(WXYZ) — Metro Detroit could head into the month of October with near-record heat.

We're already used to warmer-than-average weather. This September will likely end up in the top five warmest months of September since records began 145 years ago.

How high temperatures climb will be determined by how strong a ridge of high pressure builds across the Southeastern U.S. and Ohio Valley early next week. By Tuesday, some cities in Ohio and Indiana could climb to 90°.

The Climate Prediction Center has some of southeast Michigan in an 80 percent probability of above-average temperatures in its six to ten day temperature outlook.

Average high temperatures are in the upper 60s for the beginning of October in metro Detroit. We'll likely have highs in the 80s on Tuesday, October 1. The daily record high is 88° from 1897.

The amount of daylight per day is becoming less and the angle of the sun is getting lower, so it will be difficult for us to crack 90° in Detroit, but we have reached 90° in October three other times in the past (twice in 1963 and once in 2007).

It's important to know that we could have a big downward tilt in temperatures following this heat wave. The exact numbers are going to change as we get closer, but we could have highs in the 50s by the first weekend of October.
