The Shinola Hotel is getting ready to open.

An Italian restaurant inside will be opening their doors next week. It’s been a little more than two years since the announcement was made.

Now, the Shinola Hotel is inching closer to opening. San Morello is getting ready to serve Detroit.

“Detroit has an amazing chef culture already, especially the last five years there are a lot of great chef run restaurants here, definitely on par with what’s going on with the rest of the country,” said Chef and Owner Andrew Carmellini.

He owns 14 restaurants, most of them in New York City.

Carmellini jumped at the chance to open this Italian restaurant on the first floor of the Shinola Hotel.

“Kind of a focus on southern Italy, so Sicily, Campania, Puglia those are regions in the south,” Carmellini said.

The restaurant will soon open for dinner only, but they plan to offer breakfast, brunch and lunch too. The must-have dish is Chef Andrew’s family recipe called “my grandmother’s ravioli.”

“(It's) just kind of like a Sunday ravioli we grew up eating,” he said.

But it’s not all comfort food.

“It’s also healthy vegetable dishes and changes with the seasons,” Carmellini said. “Looking forward to summer time and being able to work with Michigan farms.”

Carmellini hopes he “buttered” you up enough to come and try his dishes.

“I can’t wait to cook for everybody,” he said.

San Morello is slated to open for dinner starting Dec. 18.

The hotel will open sometime in January.
