DETROIT (WXYZ) — Detroit police say two people are dead after an incident involving two car crashes and a shooting on Friday afternoon.

The incident started around 3:10 p.m. in the area of Burlingame and Wildemere streets as students were returning home from school.

One woman said wasn't home at the time of the incident but caught it all on her doorbell camera. Her handyman, who was working on her home at the time, helped pull children to safety after shots starting ringing out in broad daylight.

“I think about my safety and my daughter’s safety and definitely the kids around here," she told us. “I want to move. It sucks. It sucks."

Detroit Police Department Chief James White spoke to reporters at the scene Friday, calling this “a very, very complex case.” He said they are still in the initial stages of the investigation.

"This is not the usual way accidents are handled, and things went so very quickly from zero to 60," White said. "We suspect that there could be more to it than we know right now, but we don't know enough to responsibly say that."

When officers arrived in the area, White said they learned they were investigating more than a crash.

According to police, a woman driving a car was hit by a man in a burgundy pickup truck. The woman then reportedly called another person to tell them about the crash. Police believe she then started following the pickup truck and her acquaintances joined in later.

The man driving the pickup truck reportedly took off as the woman kept following and hit a minivan after blowing through a stop sign. Police say the innocent bystander driving the minivan was killed after her vehicle spun out and hit a tree.

“I mean just super tragic and there’s no words for that," White said.

After that crash, police say the driver of the pickup truck got out of his vehicle and started shooting at the people who responded to the initial woman’s call. Police called the man driving the pickup truck a suspect.

That suspect was taken to the hospital after being shot. He died from his injuries. Police said he was found on the ground at the scene with a weapon in his hand.

A second weapon was also recovered. That weapon is believed to have belonged to a person called to the scene by the initial woman.

"It's just a horrible case, senseless and we're going to look into it and hopefully make an arrest," White said. "Now we've got three families that are devastated forever from this point for a fender bender."

White says they do not know at this time if the two individuals involved in the initial crash knew each other or if this was a random road rage incident gone wrong.

Police are now looking for three suspects: two who responded to the crash call and the woman involved in the initial crash.

White said a $1,000 reward will be offered for information leading to arrests in the case. Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-SPEAK-UP.
