10 deaths associated to Legionnaires' outbreak

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services announced Friday they have added a 10th death associated to the Legionnaires' outbreak in Genesee County.

According to the updated report, there are now 88 cases and 10 deaths identified in the 2014 and 2015 outbreaks.

The latest case was identified after the MDHHS conducted a review of all Legionnaires' deaths in the state. According to the department, the person was not from Genesee County, was was hospitalized at a hospital in the county within the two week incubation period of developing LD symptoms.

“While legionellosis is not uncommon, it’s important that any person who is having symptoms of respiratory illness let their doctor know right away," MDHHS Chief Medical Executive Dr. Eden Wells said in a release.

According to the department, 43 cases of Legionnaires' Disease and five deaths were reported in a six-month period from May 2015 and October 2015. That's up from a pervious report of 42 cases and four deaths.

Of the 88 known cases between June 2014 and November 2015, 31 people received Flint water and 26 people had no known exposure to a Flint hospital in two weeks prior to the illness and also didn't have any connection to Flint water.
