15-year-old boy dies after being hit by car in Shelby Township

SHELBY TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WXYZ) — A 15-year-old boy died after being struck by a car Saturday evening in Shelby Township.

The Shelby Township Police and Fire departments were dispatched to 25 Mile Road, just west of Hayes Road, at 6:10 p.m. to reports of a pedestrian being hit by a vehicle.

The boy, who was from Macomb Township, was given emergency medical services by officers and paramedics, but later died.

The person who hit the boy is a 33-year-old man from Shelby Township. He was taken into custody, and his name is being withheld until family members have been notified.

Sources told 7 Action News the driver who hit the boy smelled like marijuana, and it is suspected he could have been driving while under the influence of marijuana. Shelby Township police would not confirm the suspect was high while driving, and said this is still under investigation.
