Here's why 2 pools in Huron Valley Schools are closed indefinitely

(WXYZ) — Two pools that used to be a fun spot for families in the Huron Valley School system are now closed indefinitely, forcing people who used the leisure pools at Lakeland High School and Milford High School to find other options.

According to the superintendent of the Huron Valley Schools, Paul Salah, the humidity and moisture is making the ceiling unsafe. That's causing the wires securing the ceiling to be weighed down, along with the potential of rust.

“We cannot take a risk of allowing anybody to get hurt,” said Salah.

In November, voters passed a $182 million bond to fix infrastructure issues.

“They got their bond passed and then they tell the people,” said Kathy Kubik, who frequents to pool at Lakeland High School pool.

Kubik says she and her friends want to see the pools stay open.

“I used to bring my grandchildren to these places, I have nine grandchildren, and we had a ball at this place,” said Kubik.

Salah said another problem is the high operating costs to maintain the pool that isn't used by high school students for learning purposes.

“We are operating the last four years a 1.6 million dollar deficit to continue operating the pools,” said Salah.

That, along with the fixes necessary to reopen the two pools, has the district weighing out the options.

“I’ve had people ask me are the pools closed forever and the answer to that is I really don’t know,” said Salah.
