The highway was closed but has since reopened near Schaefer and Grand River where the shooting happened.
Michigan State Police tell us three people are dead – two from the shootout and a third person who died after being hit by a vehicle while trying to run from the scene.
A man and a woman in one of the vehicles were shot and killed, and another suspect in a different vehicle was the one who died while trying to run from the scene.
Metro Detroit has seen a major spike in freeway shootings since last summer, with dozens across the area.
