HAMTRAMCK, Mich. (WXYZ) — A 3-year-old has died after being hit by a school bus in Hamtramck Tuesday afternoon, police said.
It happened around 3:05 p.m. on Burger Street between Fleming and Mackay streets.
Police said the 3-year-old girl was with her mother when officers arrived at the scene. The child was breathing but not responsive.
Paramedics provided aid. On the way to Children’s Hospital of Michigan in Detroit, officials say the child stopped breathing and was unresponsive. Life-saving measures were performed, but the child died.
"I’ve lived here over 10 years and I never seen something like this before," said Barbara Myroniuk, who lives a few houses away from where the crash happened. "It was just heartbreaking. Now you have a 3-year-old lost her life because of something like that."
Myroniuk says most nights, there are children outside playing in the neighborhood. She says she has been concerned about a potential crash happening as some vehicles speed through.
"My grandkids, even though they’re not small or 3 years old, I still think of them, of their safety and stuff like that. I don’t care where you’re at, you want to make sure your kids are safe," Myroniuk added.
Police have not shared what led up to the crash or if speed was a factor. 7 News Detroit did note a speed hump was near the area where the child was hit.

A family member for the child confirmed to 7 News Detroit Wednesday that the girl was hit by a school bus. The school bus belonged to the Hamtramck Public Schools bus fleet. 7 News Detroit reached out to the district for comment but the superintendent was not available.
Staff at the district's office referred our reporter to the company they say all of their drivers are contracted through. No one was immediately available.
The incident remains under investigation.
