A 3-year-old boy is dead following a vehicle crash on Detroit's east side.

The incident occurred around 7 p.m. near Seven Mile Road and Hayes on Thursday.

Police say a 27-year-old woman was driving eastbound on E. Seven Mile Road in a burgundy Dodge van with two children inside the vehicle. The driver of the van went through an intersection and collided with another driver, who suffered non-life threatening injuries in the crash.

The 3-year-old boy, who police say was in a car seat at the rear of the vehicle at the time of impact, was ejected from the van. He was then transported by police car to St. John Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Another child – a 3-month-old girl – was also restrained in the vehicle and has been hospitalized, police said. Her condition is currently unknown.

Detroit police originally reported a hit-and-run incident and later corrected that to say that no vehicles involved in the crash fled the scene. The 27-year-old woman is currently in police custody for suspected intoxication while driving.

Homicide detectives are on the scene continuing the investigation.
