(WXYZ) — Who killed Nevaeh Buchanan? It's now a decade-old question that still hasn't been answered.

It was back on May 24, 2009 when the 5-year-old was abducted from her apartment complex parking lot where she had been playing.

There were massive searches in and around Monroe, but they turned up nothing.

Then, on June 4, 2009, fishermen found her body in a shallow grave encased in concrete near the River Raisin.

Early on, police named two persons of interest, but they were never charged. Both men were convicted sex offenders who were known to Nevaeh's mother.

Ahead of this ten year anniversary, 7 Action News reporter Anu Prakash sat down with Nevaeh's maternal grandmother, Sherry Buchanan.

She misses Nevaeh every day and strongly believes that whoever took Nevaeh must have been someone she knew.

"Nevaeh had to know this person for her to go with that person. Everybody around that apartment said they heard no screaming or nothing," says Buchanan.

Buchanan spoke about how she remembers her granddaughter and what she wants most. On 7 Action News at 6, we'll also share what police have to say on this 10 year anniversary.

On May 31, there is a special event being held at the Moose Lodge at 1320 Macomb to remember Nevaeh. Beginning at 6 p.m, there will be a dinner, guest speakers and a child ID event. There will also be a dedication for a bench that will be placed by the river where she was found.

The event is free, but space is limited. Admission is by RSVP only to 734-419-3232.
