BIRMINGHAM, Mich. (WXYZ) — A desperate search is underway for a Birmingham native who went missing off Lake Michigan.

The family of Jacob Sandy, 23, said he has not been heard from since Saturday after he told his girlfriend he was going out kayaking.

Authorities near Porter Beach in Indiana said he was last seen on surveillance video around 2:40 p.m. A witness also observed Sandy kayaking offshore a short time before a strong storm came into the area, Indiana Department of Natural Resources said in a press release.

First responders began a search of Lake Michigan on Wednesday morning, conducting surface and sonar searches.

On Thursday, parishioners gathered at St. James Episcopal Church in Birmingham for a special prayer service.
