HAMTRAMCK, Mich. (WXYZ) — It's Fat Tuesday, and metro Detroit is kicking it off with its years-long unique tradition: Paczki Day.

New Martha's Bakery in Hamtramck has been open since 5 a.m. Monday filling dozens and dozens of pre-ordered sweet traditional Polish doughy treats with long lines of walk-ins, and Sandy Bakic balances it all.

"I started working here when I was 14 years old," Bakic said.

Her parents bought the bakery in the 1970s after moving to Hamtramck from Eastern Europe, bringing a secret family recipe with them for the special-filled bakery.

Their menu has grown a lot over the years, featuring traditional fillings like raspberry, blueberry, cherry, apple, apricot, lemon and custard and unique ones like rosehip, grape, guava, black raspberry and buttercream.
