IONIA, Mich. (WXYZ) — Daily COVID testing at an Ionia prison following the detection of the variant in an employee has resulted in 90 cases of the variant being found.

Nearly a week ago, an employee at Bellamy Creek Correctional Facility in Ionia tested positive for the COVID variant, SARS-CoV-2, B.1.1.7. That prompted daily testing, instead of the normal weekly testing.

Officials say 88 prisoners and two employees have tested positive. There are still 100 lab results in the pending stage.

Additional precautions were put in place to address the positive diagnosis, officials said.
