DETROIT (WXYZ) — Greektown Casino-Hotel will lay off 43 employees due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

"These layoffs at Greektown Casino-Hotel are the unfortunate result of COVID-19 related business circumstances that were sudden, dramatic and beyond our control," the company said while announcing the layoffs.

The company said the "significant drags" on the business will likely continue for the foreseeable future. The "drags" include the initial closure of casinos and the interruption of almost all business and travel.

Greektown Casino-Hotel said it "simply could not foresee" the pandemic.

Casinos were allowed to reopen in Michigan on Aug. 6 after being closed since March.
