Michigan Department of Natural Resources lifts statewide burning ban

(WXYZ) — The Michigan Department of Natural Resources has lifted the statewide open burning ban related to the COVID-19 response.

The DNR is now allowing open burning based on weather and county regulations.

Previously, permits for open burning were suspended across the state in response to Governor Gretchen Whitmer's "Stay Home, Stay Safe" executive order.

Permits were suspended to make sure there was less potential for escaped fires, making emergency response resources more available.

The DNR previously noted that open burning is the number one cause of wildfires in Michigan.
