Tips on maintaining your New Year's health resolutions during the pandemic

(WXYZ) — It's a new year and many people are making resolutions to get healthier in 2021. That journey doesn’t have to be difficult.

There are ways to get fit while staying safe amid the pandemic, whether you work out in a gym or at home. Gyms are usually packed this time of year with people starting new workout routines.

However, in Michigan there are capacity limits and mask mandates because of the pandemic.

“Take that first step. Consider working out,” said Renee Gray, a trainer with Planet Fitness. She suggests working out with a friend to help each get motivated.

If you decide to workout at a gym, to stay safe Renee says to wash your hands before and after working out, wipe down the equipment and go during off-peak hours.

Planet Fitness has a crowd meter on its app to help determine if the gym has reached capacity limits.

Before working out, Gray suggests recording your current weight and current measurements so that you can measure progress.

If you are not comfortable working out at a gym, you can get fit at home. This can be convenient if you are working from home.

Health experts say you can work out during lunch and you don’t even have to shower before going back to work. Take a walk around your block. If you want to train with someone else safely, try Zoom workouts or use a fitness app.

“Just finding quiet time in your house, quiet space,” said Will McCray of WillPower Fitness Group in Clawson.

He says doing jumping jacks and squats can be simple tasks to get your body moving.

“If you can only carve out 5, 10, 15 minutes that’s a great start,” McCray said.

If you want something more, Willpower Fitness streams their W.A.R. Workout here. It’s a 30-minute, high-intensity routine that doesn’t require any equipment.

“It is a complete workout," McCray said. "It works your entire body, it makes you sweat, your upper body, your core, your legs, your glutes.”
