(WXYZ) — Michigan is in a stronger position in the fight against COVID-19 than other states, Governor Gretchen Whitmer said in a press conference Tuesday.
However, Whitmer noted that numbers that came out Tuesday are not as strong as they were a couple of weeks ago, so the state must keep up its guard.
"Over the past week, we have seen some examples of what can happen when we drop our guard," she said.
Whitmer cited Harper's Brew Pub in East Lansing, saying it has led to more than 100 cases of COVID-19 so far, and has spread to Grosse Pointe, as well.
"This is not unique to East Lansing, to Michigan," she said. "This is happening across the country, but we have to learn from this instance."
"Just one person who lets their guard down can infect countless others," she said.
Whitmer said that as the weather improves and summer holidays approach, the state cannot "play fast and loose" with the rules.
"I'm hopeful that this weekend, Michiganders will choose to celebrate the Fourth safely. Take it easy this year."
